Common Foods to Avoid With Diabetes

We’re here again talking about some foods that diabetics should avoid.  This is a modest list of some of the more deceiving foods to eat. While fruit and coffee seem harmless, under, certain circumstances they can spike blood sugar levels with additives and natural sugars. While insulin will be necessary, a good diet can never be ignored to maintain a steady blood sugar. This means eliminating certain foods from your diet, and the following are some of the most important ones to cut back on.

Fruit Juice

You probably know to cut back on soda if you are a diabetic, but fruit juice is not any better. It might seem like a healthy alternative, but most types of juice contain a ton of added sugar. If you really want to take advantage of the nutrients found in fruit, then just eat a whole piece of fruit. It will be much better for you.

Sweet Coffee Drinks

Regular black coffee is fine in limited amounts. However, you should avoid the fancy, decadent coffee drinks you find at certain coffee chains. These drinks contain a ton of sugar in addition to being topped with whipped cream.

Breakfast Cereals

Many cereals advertise themselves as a great way to start the day. For someone with diabetes, that is not going to be the case. Instead, you should have breakfasts that contain a sufficient amount of protein and are low in carbohydrates.

White Bread and White Rice

These might seem fine at first glance, but once your body starts to digest these, it begins to treat it like sugar. The glucose levels in your blood will spike after consumption. Stick with whole grain bread when you want a sandwich, and swap out the white rice with brown rice.

Fatty Meats

Steak is filled with saturated fats. Diabetics already face a greater likelihood of developing heart problems, and eating a lot of red meat can exacerbate those problems. While protein is important in your diet, you should stick with leaner cuts of meat, such as turkey, chicken and fish.

Dried Fruit

Dried fruit might seem like a healthy snack option, but in reality, it is filled with sugar. The problem is that when fruit is dehydrated, higher concentrations of sugar develop. Fresh fruit is always the best option.

Fried Foods

Most fast foods are fried. They are packed with oils, calories and other bad things your body does not need. Some common fried foods to avoid include:

  • French fries

  • Potato chips

  • Fried chicken

  • Fried dough

This is one of the more obvious foods not to eat, but many of us forget that chicken might be better than a fatty steak, but not if it’s fried. Keep looking out for those calories that are added to already delicious foods. Make sure there’s no residual sugar added to a bowl of strawberries, for example. Keep your eyes open and you’ll be on your way to a happier, healthier life.
