The debate around what foods are “healthy” is a heated topic. One day the newest nutrition fad is healthy, the next it’s not, but all Nutritional recommendations have one thing in common.

In a recent study by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, they found that only nine percent of Americans are eating their recommended servings of fruits and vegetables.

 Live Longer and Healthier

The Center for Disease Control findings are a real problem if we are planning on living a long and healthy life because the benefits of fruits and vegetables include fighting/preventing illness and providing the body with nutrients the make your body feel better. Even if you are eating salads all day and you believe you are getting all your greens, chances are you are probably missing some of the most important ones that will make a real difference to your health.

Let’s discover the truth about eating nutritious greens.

 Importance of Fruits and Vegetables

Three things make fruits and vegetables so important.

 -Vitamins and minerals
-Phytonutrients
-Fiber

Vitamins and minerals are by far the most important of the three benefits. Most of these vitamins and minerals are fundamental to our bodies health in every way.

Phytonutrients is a fancy word for antioxidants, flavonoids, polyphenols, carotenoids and many other compounds that play a role in overall health.  Have you ever heard that you should eat different color fruits and vegetables? That is because phytonutrients are what give plants their different colors.

Finally Fiber, which we will break up into two sections (insoluble and soluble). Soluble fiber can help control your appetite and bolsters fullness, due to its ability to soak our water. Some recent studies have also shown that soluble fiber can be beneficial to the health of our gut (Dietary fiber: Essential for a healthy diet - Mayo Clinic).

A bonus benefit of consuming fruits and vegetables may include their ability to add in defense the damage done by eating poor food choices.
